Slab cup

Slabbing was the second technique that I learned. It involves flattening a piece of clay with a rolling pin (not to be used ever again on food). I made this nice cup and rolled a lace cloth on top to get a pattern on the slab.

Clay: White earthenware clay with grog.

Method: To get an even thickness, roll the clay out between two flat dowels of equal thicknesses. Rotate the clay as you roll, so as to stretch the clay in all directions. This prevents the clay from warping as it dries, or when it is fired. Unfortunately, I didn't do a good job with this, as most of my plates were warped. Cut the shape you want to make the vessel you need. There are plenty of templates you can get online for this. Roll a clay ball and flatten it to shape the base of the cup. Score the sides of the base and the lower part of the slab and attach the scored surfaces with slip. Attach a coil to the inner join and press down to make a good seal to avoid leaks. Trim a foot, or leave the base flat.

Glaze: Matt red glaze.
