Inspiration: Dawn Tagawa's lovely cut out bowls and vases (no website, but Google or Pinterest her name and you'll find pictures). I thought they would make very fine fruit bowls for grapes, strawberries and cherries.
Clay: Terracotta, dark brown
Method: Slabbed, then stretched the slab over a mixing bowl. As it stretched the clay stretched apart and I had to cut darts and rejoin pieces together. I shaped cones to attach to the base as feet, and cut two 1 inch strips for handles and attached them to the sides at the top. My teacher had metal hole-cutting tubes I used to cut holes, otherwise a straw would work as well. I cut some of the holes a little small, which was a problem later when the holes were closed up by the glaze.
Glaze: Glossy red brown.
Issues: as with most of my slab projects so far, this one warped as well, although I suspect it was due to the weight of the handles pulling the clay down (I didn't let the vessel dry on the mixing bowl like I did with the 'Noodle' bowl. I'd also rolled the slab a little too thin, I think.
Potential future project: I'd love to make some terracotta strawberry punnets.
